The pillory was considered as a mild torture as no one dies from it but the crowd sometimes made it dangers. It is mainly done to humiliate the victim in front of the town. The pillory was used to publicly humiliate a victim. Even though it was meant as a mild form of punishment, the crowd sometimes made it lethal. The victim hands will be tide to the wooden piece and placed in a high surface so everyone can see him. The crowd that pass will shock rotten unwanted vegetables like rotten cabbage. Other people throw rocks and heavy items and sometimes even start punching him, and cutting his hair of for humiliation. The victim will be defenceless but can throw the objects back at the crowd. Depending on the crime the victim can be in the pillory for a couple of hours or even days. |
